Some items on the website are made available for printing. The wide variety of viewing computers may lead to compatability problems.
To counteract these, the relevant material is presented in portable document format (p.d.f.)
Many modern computers have the necessary Adobe Acrobat Reader which is called up automatically. Failing this, the Reader can be downloaded from
www.adobe.com
Web pages are designed for display on a computer screen. Adjustments may have to be made if print-outs are required.
The website layout uses "frames" with the navigation headings on the left hand side.
The following instructions apply to the later versions of Internet Explorer.
To print only the RH frame (e.g. A Society's lecture programme),
click inside the RH frame and then click the print icon on the toolbar.
Select print preview and select "only the selected frame" in the penultimate box on the toolbar.
The contents should then appear as you want them; if not, you can make further adjustments.
The pages on this website are updated whenever new information comes to hand.
A viewed web page will be stored on your hard disk as a temporary internet file
and might be used on a future occasion to save download time.
Most modern machines are set to find and display the latest version. However, if this is not happening,
use the refresh button on the tool bar.
This can be automated by setting options in the Internet Options
section on your Control Panel.
You can select a setting which forces your browser to download from the website
every time you call for the page.
Internet Options > Browsing History > Settings
The advent of broadband now means that there is little time advantage to be gained by
using a locally stored version.
Incoming emails may have attachments which will be listed in an information bar at the top.
Filenames will have an extension which will indicate the software required to open them.
.doc requires the presence of Microsoft Word (Office) Version 2003 (or later)
.docx requires MS Word (Office) Version 2007

The following file types should not be dependent on the type of computer/operating system :
.txt can be opened using any text editor.
.rtf (rich text format) can be opened using any text editor supporting formatted text, including Apple TextEdit
.pdf (portable document format) requires Adobe Acrobat Reader (obtainable with free download from Adobe website.)
The Area Committee has recently decided that all documents issued to Societies should
use the Arial font in 12 pt.
These documents will normally be prepared using Microsoft Word and there should be no difficulty
in sending electronic copies to compatible receiving computers.
Please, however, note the section above which deals with file extensions.
Some older machines with different screen configurations and resolutions may
alter the layout of tables and images.
The issue of copyright is currently under discussion. As a general rule, it is illegal
to make copies of and use web-based images.
Artifacts in museums and galleries are viewed from this website using links embodying the owner's web address.
